Steff’s Journey to Rebuilding Confidence and Securing Employment

Background

Steff faced significant barriers to employment after sustaining an ankle fracture that limited his ability to take on roles requiring extended periods of standing or walking. Before relocating to the UK, Steff had a successful career as an operations manager in the tourism and hospitality sector, complemented by a bachelor’s degree and several management and leadership qualifications. However, challenges such as limited English-speaking confidence, a lack of local job opportunities, and not having a driving license made his employment search more difficult.

Creating a Plan

To address Steff’s immediate and long-term needs, we agreed to focus first on securing a role that could reduce financial pressures and reintroduce him to the workplace environment. This approach would allow him to update his CV, improve his English-speaking skills, and gain confidence in workplace interactions. Additionally, this role would serve as a stepping stone to explore middle-management positions aligned with his skills, experience, and aspirations.

Steps Taken

We worked closely with Steff to identify his transferable skills and craft a CV that highlighted his accomplishments and potential. This CV helped him secure a Barista role with a well-known international coffee chain in his local area. Following his initial employment success, we continued supporting Steff in enhancing his job-searching strategies, teaching him how to:

  • Respond to advertised roles.
  • Proactively seek hidden opportunities.
  • Tailor his CV and cover letter for each role.
  • Set up job alerts with relevant organizations.

Recognizing the limitations of his local area, Steff relocated to a nearby city with greater opportunities in the hospitality sector, further broadening his options.

Achieving Success

Steff’s efforts paid off quickly. After starting as a Barista, he was promoted to team leader, taking on responsibilities such as training and mentoring staff. His growing confidence in communication led to multiple offers for an assistant manager role, which he declined due to its physical demands. With the support of his store manager, he was able to advocate for himself and explain his limitations effectively. Within six months of commencing employability support, Steff was offered and accepted the position of store manager with another franchise of the same coffee chain. This role allowed him to combine his leadership skills with a manageable work environment.

“After my work accident, I could not find a job for a long time. I found a job in a short time with the great support of SDM Training Services. They gave very effective and solution-oriented training, especially for searching and finding a job suitable for my current situation.

I would like to thank Mr. Stuart Miller, an expert in this field, for all the support, motivation, and positive approach he provided.”

Steff’s story demonstrates the value of tailored employability support in overcoming barriers and achieving meaningful employment. By focusing on his unique circumstances and providing strategic guidance, he was able to rebuild his confidence, advance his career, and secure a role that aligns with his goals and abilities. This journey is a testament to the power of persistence and the importance of expert vocational rehabilitation.
