Learning more about apprenticeships

Situation

East Kent College have over 4,000 students studying various courses across multiple sites. Their Progression Advisor was keen that their Canterbury based students developed a greater understanding of apprenticeships as an option following the completion of their current course. They approached SDM Training Services to deliver a range of presentations to students, staff and parents over several visits.

Task

It was vital that any presentations would be both informative and engaging, ensuring that those who attended left with a greater level of knowledge of the subject. This would include up to date data, as well as some actions that would help them not just around apprenticeships, but also searching and applying for work generally.

Action

We conducted market research on the current apprenticeship schemes, processes, availability and cultures, to add to our existing knowledge of the system. This information was put into a presentation that highlighted the many benefits and challenges associated with securing apprenticeships, right up to level 7 qualifications. This included exploring the vast range of roles available within many organisations and encouraging people to look beyond what is obvious. As an example, a large well-known chain of coffee shops has roles that stretches far beyond working as a Barista. They also have HR, marketing, management, logistics, supply chain, data analysts and finance roles, amongst many others. This was incorporated into a discussion around proactive job searching techniques to compliment any reactive job searching they may already be aware of. Those who attended were able to give some great examples of how to find opportunities that underpinned not only their learning, but also their willingness to achieve the goals they set themselves. These involved various use of media, networks, creativity and volunteering or work experience. This was complimented with some live examples of local apprenticeships being advertised via the Government website.

The presentation concluded with some in-depth information around general employability skills including developing a CV, applying for roles and preparing for interviews, skills that stretch far beyond just apprenticeships.

Result

Those who attended remained alert and engaged, despite there being some large groups of more than 100 in attendance. Many asked questions related to the types of roles available, and the support offered for those who have additional learning needs. It was also great to have a 1:1 discussion with many who had renewed enthusiasm and energy to apply for apprenticeships and discuss their own strategy for identifying these.
